Spring is prime time. As water temperatures climb into the 50s and 60s, big pre-spawn females move up to stage on grass edges and shallow flats, and Guntersville is famous for producing trophy fish in March and April. Lipless crankbaits, swim jigs, and chatterbaits ripped through emerging grass draw violent strikes, and sight-fishing the spawn can put a true giant in the boat.
When summer heat settles in, the bass set up on the deep river ledges and offshore grass that make Guntersville legendary. This is classic Tennessee River ledge fishing — big crankbaits, swimbaits, and football jigs on schools of fish holding to current breaks. Early-morning topwater over matted grass is also explosive before the sun gets high.
